Alumni Events go from strength to strengthJuly 31st, 2018
The third Salters’ Graduate Awardwinners Event was held at Salters’ Hall on 10th July 2018. This followed on from two successful events in 2017, one at Salters’ Hall and the other in Edinburgh. It was another really successful event with lots of networking taking place amongst the Alumni and Salters who were present. 22 past Graduate Awardwinners attended, 12 Chemists and 10 Chemical Engineers, covering a broad number of award winning years, ranging from 1980 through to 2017. This led to a great diversity of experiences and made for an ideal networking environment. Following an introduction by Liz Jennings, a Member of the Salters’ Company and past Awardwinner, there were three presentations, two from past Alumni, Harsh Pershad and Emma Sceats, and one from Allan Clements, a freeman of the Salters’ Company who had worked for ICI for over 30 years and then several years working at the boundary of industry and education. Harsh was a Chemistry Awardwinner in 1996, who now works for Innovate UK. He gave us a very interesting overview of his career journey to date, with many insights to some of the advice that he had been given over the years. Emma, a Chemistry Awardwinner from 2002, also shared her career journey from university to her role as CEO of CN Bioinnovations, a biopharma company making “organs on chips”. She gave a very open and honest reflection on her career and some of the challenges that she has faced. Allan gave an overview of his career in ICI and then talked about some of the work he is involved in with ESERO-UK, also known as the UK-space education office which supports the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) using space as a context. These three presentations prompted a lot of interesting questions and discussion.
Next up was an opportunity for some round table discussions, a sort of “speed dating” type exchange where everyone had 5 minutes to share a summary of their career history. It was then time for a drink and some supper and a chance to engage with others for an hour or so before the formal ending of the event. Over supper, there was lots of noise, chatter and exchanging of business cards – all indicators of a successful networking event.
The next Alumni event is being held at AstraZeneca, Macclesfield on Thursday 13 September 2018. If you would like to attend, please contact Stephanie Mearns firstname.lastname@example.org.
The plan is to hold two Alumni events each year, one in London and one outside of London, so hopefully you are able to join us at a future event. We will start to build up the use of our LinkedIn group later this year, so if you have any ideas of how we could use it, please get in touch.
It is your Alumni network, please let us know how you would like to see it develop.
