Salters’ Chemistry Camps India

The Salters’ Institute is undertaking an exciting project working with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) to deliver a joint five year “Inspirational Chemistry Programme” in India. This project has been sponsored by Yusuf Hamied, leading Indian philanthropist and pioneer in the pharmaceutical industry.

The RSC and the Salters’ Institute hope to enhance the skills and knowledge of Indian Chemistry teachers and inspire students to study Chemistry at University by applying their own expertise in education and combining this with the experience of partners in India.

From 2014-2018, the aim is to:

  • Provide Chemistry Camps for 1,600 of the brightest students from all backgrounds
  • Directly develop the knowledge and skills of over 400 talented Chemistry teachers
  • Work with these teachers to reach 8,000 teachers in a “train the trainer” model

Due to the generous support of Dr Hamied, the Institute has been given the opportunity to adapt the Chemistry Camps model for use with disadvantaged students in India. After successful pilot Camps in 2015, the Camps programme is now being rolled out at Universities throughout India and a total of 10 Camps have taken place so far, with more planned over the next 2 years.

At each Camp approximately 60 students in 9 Standard grade (14-15 year olds), from Government schools, participate in a varied programme of practical activities (delivered in local languages), chemical demonstrations and fun lectures. They also enjoy time to socialise with like-minded students. Faculty Members of the University or a team of local teachers mentor the students at each of the 3 day Camps (depending on the venue).  641 students  from 204 schools have participated so far.
